Auto Kill Non-Responding Programs in XP

November 4th, 2008

This is one of the problem most windows XP users face. Many a times programs like Office, Winamp, Firefox, windows media player, etc stop responding and a “End Now” screen pops up. Clicking the end now button doesn’t help sometimes or take longer time to shut that application. The alternative  way to terminate is to End the Process from the Windows Task Manager.  Also, during windows shutdown applications like Firefox and Winamp take longer time to close, delaying the shutdown process. Here’s a simple solution for auto terminating the non responding  Windows programs.

A simple registry tweak can solve this problem in just 2 mins.

Follow these steps and get rid of the pesky not responding windows.

  • Backup your register. If anything goes wrong you can revert back to the original settings.
  • Goto  Start >Run type Regedit and press OK.
  • Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
  • Now on the right panel search for a string called AutoEndTaks.

Double click and change its value to “1″ (Default is 0). Enabling this will terminate any non-responding process automatically.

  • Suppose you want to give some time, as some programs come back to normal in few minutes, Search for  a key called as WaitToKillAppTimeout“, change the value to the desired value. Note, the new value which you enter should be in milliseconds. This is bit advanced setting, so not advisable.

If anything goes wrong you can change the registry settings back to how they were before using the backup registry file. I’m sure you won’t have any problems as such, because it’s very simple.

Note: Restart PC for the changes to take effect.
