How to Backup Windows Registry?
A lot of windows users still actually don’t understand what the registry is and why they have to backup. In simple words, registry is a vault where all the windows settings and information and behavior of the programs used is stored.
Why backup registry? Is it important?
One has to be very careful while editing the registry, as one single mistake can basically stop windows from loading at startup. Changes are made in the registry when you install or uninstall any program this may even makes the system unstable if done with errors. Also, some spyware and adware will modify your system’s registry in order to take over your web browser. To avoid all this, backing up your registry becomes a necessary preventive step.
Backup Registry is very simple and needs no Third party software.
One simple way to Back up registry is using the SYSTEM RESTORE function.
System Restore is the easiest way to undo changes if problem occurs. Once created a restore point you can rollback to that point whenever needed.
To launch system restore quickly, just type this at the command prompt:
C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
and press OK
Okay, How to create a back up file?
Registry Backup file is a simple registry file (.reg) file which contains all the registry information ( usually around 50 to 100MB)
- To create one Open Registry editor
Start > Run > type “regedit” ( without quotes) and press OK.
- On the file Menu, click Export.
- Browse where you want to save the file, Enter the desired filename and click Save
You can even create a backup for a specific key. Again the process is same,
Right click that particular process in the left panel of the registry editor and click Export. Now that you have the registry file, next time you stumble you can rollback simply by double clicking the backup registry file.
