There is a new Android app available that allows the regular Joe or Jane to deftly wield the power of money against the dark minions of SOPA. Get a closer look at this Android app called "Boycott SOPA" here in this quick article.

Two College Programmers Against SOPA

The powerhouse that is becoming what is known as the mobile revolution now has a potent tool for the public. For those who are familiar with the political action called "SOPA" that is brewing, you are probably wondering, "What can I do about SOPA?". Now, two college level programmers have done it for you. It is called "Boycott SOPA" and one of the best things about it is that it is a free download.

Money Talks, And Android Apps Are Helping

The idea for SOPA came from the companies of Hollywood, California. All they needed was for someone with enough power to take down so-called sites that offend copyright laws. They found a willing sponsor for their plan to take down web sites in the Congress of the United States. The "Boycott SOPA" Android app takes care of this abuse of power in the form of a simple program. It hits the companies that support SOPA right where it hurts the worst, in their bank accounts.

Beer And Pizza Keeps This Android App Rolling

The two programmers who are making the "Boycott SOPA" program are keeping their names out of the spotlight. No names are found on the regular pages of their web site ( nomoresopa dot com ) and they are guarding it in the Whois information from their domain registrar. Nevertheless, what they have designed an easy to use tool that simply scans barcodes and tells the scanner if the company selling the product is supporting SOPA or not. All they ask for is donations to help them buy beer and pizza. They say it will help them to keep the "Boycott SOPA" program updated.

How To Get Started With Your Own Smartphone

To get started with the "Boycott SOPA" Android app a free scanner app called "ZXing Barcode Scanner" will need to be downloaded first. After that, the "Boycott SOPA" app can be downloaded. That is it for the most part. The app is used to scan products which then tells the user that the product is or is not made by a company that supports SOPA. The app is in the Android market as you read this and has a favorable rating from those who have used it.

Download Boycott SOPA for Android

Kenny Bowyer is a freelance writer that contributes to different websites online. One of the key technological advancements of our time, the mobile phone has vastly improved our communication capabilities, enabling us to connect and keep in touch with each other.

But do you know how they work? Are you aware of the mobile phone networks that facilitate this impressive communication infrastructure and the history behind it? If not, let’s take a look at how the mobile phone network works and how it has evolved.

Guiglielmo Marconi made the initial radio transmission way back in 1895. It took just three decades before radio was being utilized for day to day media broadcasts and for two radio to aid police and military forces. Today, about 60% of the British population use mobile phones, that’s an astonishing 40 million people talking to each other.

Radio waves are transmitted and received by mobile phones and their base stations. The electromagnetic waves are comprised of oscillating electric and magnetic waves. The number of times each second these waves oscillate is known as the frequency and this decides exactly how they can be used.

Mobile phone services operate between three different frequency bands:

872-960 MHz,

1710-1875 MHz and

1920-2170 MHz.

Radio communication utilizes carrier waves, which are created as a sine wave by the transmitter, which constantly repeats itself.

This carrier wave is able to contain and deliver more information through a process called modulation, which involves a part of the carrier wave being varied in line with the information being transmitted. In mobile phones this is done using digital techniques.

A mobile phone network is created using multiple base stations. When a mobile phone either sends or receives information, such as calls, texts, images, sounds or videos, the information is transmitted using these base stations. The mobile phone transmits radio signals to the closest base station, while incoming radio signals, carrying the other person’s speech or information, are transmitted at a different frequency from the base station.

The vast number of base stations creates the expansive mobile network connecting mobile phone users across the world. Every base station gives radio coverage to a designated cell. Each cell represents a geographical area of radio coverage. The base stations are connected via switching centres tracking calls and managing their transfer from cell to cell.

Strong networks are created by having a vast field of cells with central base stations which slightly overlap at the edges, facilitating smooth transfers between cells. An insufficient number of base stations placed in the right positions would cause disrupted signals due to the inability to transfer properly from each cell.

It can come as quite a surprise to learn how much work goes into keeping a simple mobile phone call undisrupted. When a person is moving and crosses cell boundaries each base station passes network control to the next base station. This is why such a large number of base stations are required to keep the signal strength in each cell strong enough without distance interrupting the smooth transfer in between cells.

The sheer volume of mobile phone users means multiple base stations are often needed to cover just one town. Mobile phone operators are limited to the number of calls their base stations can manage at any given time.

To get the most out of the available radio spectrum in each area, mobile phone operators reuse radio frequencies over and over again within the network. Cells are clustered, with frequencies assigned to them, and the mobile phone operator carefully manipulates the cells in an orchestrated repetitive pattern of frequency reuse.

Mobile phone operators use two different technologies within their UK mobile phone networks:

The Groupe Speciale Mobile/Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) operates within the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz frequency bands and enables calls to be made to and from different countries, as part of the wider international digital mobile network.

However, the higher demands made by multimedia smartphones utilize the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS), which operates in the region of 2 GHz.

There we have it, next time you’re in a car or on a train and are making a call on your Mobile phone try to visualize the hexagonal web of cells you’re traversing and the sheer amount of technology and energy working hard to keep you talking.

How Does a Mobile Phone Network Work? is a post from: Snakebytez

Blackberry vs. iPhone – Office Wars

GADGETS

bb6

blackberry

ios5

iphone

Microsoft and Apple have been doing battle for a long time now, but the last few years have been focused on the mobile war as much as the world of PC vs Mac. This continues in 2011 with the release of both Apple’s iPhone 4s and the Blackberry Torch. So, how do these two devices compare?

Both of these phones come equipped with excellent smart phone applications and capabilities. They both allow full-fledged internet access, meaning that getting to your web-based mail, cloud applications, and cloud storage are very simple. GPS navigation, access to an application market, WiFi capabilities, and expandable memory are a few other common traits. Both of these models also feature stronger and faster specs across the board.

Operating System

The first difference of major importance is the Operating System in use. The BlackBerry Torch is using BB6 – the newest in the OS lineup designed specifically for the BlackBerry brand. The difference between BB5 and 6 is found primarily in its social networking capabilities, picture and video features, and other media aspects.

The appeal is reaching far more toward the non-professional crowd, a change of pace that encroaches on Apple’s usual territory. Of greatest note, BlackBerry’s mobile internet access has expanded in a dramatic way, with load speeds testing faster than any other smartphone browser on the same network.

The Apple iPhone 4s OS, rather than adding features, has gone down the road of simplicity. It improves functionality, speed, and it helps extend battery life. For most, iOS5 is a superior system, but security concerns from early in the release stage still have some people frightened off.

The Looks

Aesthetically the two brands are moderately similar. Blackberry is a somewhat less thin model, but it does come equipped with a slide-out keyboard and a touch screen. The iPhone, on the other hand, requires that people use the tap-to-type QWERTY interface.

Screen Resolution

The greatest difference for those who care about image, however, will be found in the screen resolution. The Torch is only a 480 x 360 resolution, which falls short of the average for new release smart phones. The iPhone 4s approximately doubles these specs (960 x 640) and provides better imaging technology.

The Apps

Even with significant improvements to the Microsoft "App World," the number of free and pay applications pales in comparison to those found in Apple’s network. In fact, App World still comes in third, placing behind Android, for mobile app markets.

Battery Life

Battery life is another spec where the iPhone 4s is superior to the BlackBerry. Battery life, a common criticism of smart phones, is finally starting to see some expansion. The Torch sees about five and a half hours of talk time – a step up from many other smart phones – but the iPhone 4s surpasses them all with seven hours of average talk time. Even though the battery life of the iPhone is better, the processing speed remains faster than the Torch.

Microsoft has finally brought a solid smart phone with mass appeal, but it may be a day late and a dollar short. The truth is, BlackBerry can’t hold a Torch to iPhone 4s.

Jessy is a momrepreneur and social media enthusiast. The increase in the number of smart phones and tablets is gearing up on a high note. There are several key players in the market who are predominantly dominant in selling these gadgets. Toshiba has decided to step up its contribution with the launch of its “Toshiba Excite Android Tablet” in January 2012.

Much Awaited Launch:

The Toshiba website is running its campaign and promotional advertisements on its websites and is spreading the news through social networking sites. It is currently being promoted as a holiday gift product. Toshiba had already tasted the success buds with the soft launch of its previous 7 inch and 10 inch tablets. The products were received well across the globe. It’s now time to launch the 10.1 inch screen with LCD display and LED back lighting. The 1280×800 pixel display will make it very special and elegant.

Features of Excite Tablet:

The device is powered by all new Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 processor with the processing power of 1.2 gigahertz. It is simply superb for the elegant functioning of the device. The tablet runs on Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system which is one of the advanced OS available in today’s scenario. Excite is equipped with lot many features and supports up to 200,000 applications available in the open market.

It is equipped with 2 mega pixel front end camera and has 5 MP back end camera. The processing power of the camera is little bit disappointing while comparing with its other functionalities. It comes with a micro SD slot and a mini USB 2.0 port. It also has a micro HDMI port to support advanced devices. The other normal features such as Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth is available in this version. It will be a very handy device while you are on the go. It keeps you entertained for unlimited time and takes out the work pressure from you.

Are You Ready For The Sensation?

Toshiba Excite android tablet comes in 2 variants – one with 16 GB storage area and the other with 32 GB storage area. Toshiba boasts this device to be the slimmest and lightest of all tablets available in the market today. There is no clear picture about its pricing and about the world wide launch.

If you have been on the hunt to buy a latest Android power tablet with stunning features, Toshiba’s Excite would be a nice feast to start with. Experts argue that it would definitely live up to the expectations as Toshiba has tried hard to give its best.

Server racks and network cabinets” are an important topic in the field of Technology. Both phones offer diverse playing fields and offer users something that the other just quite can’t. So which company offers the better smartphone and operating system overall?

Contender #1: Android

Android has long been known for providing a more utilitarian approach to their phones. These are the type of phones that you want when you aren’t focused on style so much as getting the job done. This is the type of operating system that doesn’t play around with fancy moves. It a no-nonsense, heavyweight competitor that knocks you out with 1-2 punch.

Customization

If you want to have your phone fit only your needs, then Android is for you. Android isn’t about providing the same interface for everyone to use. They want you to use it however you need to, to accomplish whatever you need to get done. So whether you work for a corporate reputation management firm or are a serious professional blogger, Android will let you customize your phone so that it can help you get your job done as quickly as possible and in whatever fashion you wish to do it. The upcoming release of Ice Cream Sandwich will also be sure to provide even greater functionality to Android phones.

Phones

Android’s operating systems function on a variety of phones, and the two stand out brands are Samsung and HTC. HTC’s Sense is one of the best, if not the best, UI on the market, and Samsung has repeatedly offered superior phones – so much so that Apple has gone after the brand. With an iPhone, you only get one phone and one phone only. With Android you have an entire selection to choose from so you can get whatever fits your style and needs.

4G

In keeping with its utilitarian approach, Android offers phones that function on 4G. In short, 4G will be a network capable of functioning at high speeds and with multiple browsers open so that users can get done what they want, when they need to.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Contender #2: The iPhone

Apple has always been about providing an experience to its users. It doesn’t give you a workhorse that you train yourself; it provides you with a service already to go. iOS5 is the lightweight competitor; the type of crowd favorite that knows how to engage and captivate an audience, that has style and grace, but still knows how to deliver a punch and get the job done at the end of the day.

Simplicity

Everything about Apple is designed to be simple, yet highly effective. You only need one charger for all your Apple devices, and the iPhone iOS hasn’t really changed its design or overall functioning. Everything is easy to use and just makes sense, making it much easier to use for those of us who don’t want to tinker and customize their phone, but simply use it.

Apps

Apple still has the greatest number of apps on the market, and users can just about find an app to make any facet of their life easier or more entertaining. Android’s apps are growing and still just as capable, but the operating system just doesn’t have as vast as a selection.

iOS 5

With iOS 5 came Siri and iCloud, which have definitely changed the way that people view a smartphone’s functioning. Siri is an excellent virtual personal assistant that can answer questions, send you reminders, and basically carry on a conversation with you. iCloud allows users to sync all of their information so that they can access their information from any of their devices allowing for continuous connectivity.

While we would love to say that one of these operating systems dominates the other, it simply isn’t true. Both brands offer great features that appeal to different markets. If you are an Apple fanatic, Apple’s phones and operating systems are going to be the greatest thing ever to you no matter what they release. If you are a control freak, you are going to want an Android workhorse of a phone that is completely customizable – something only Android can offer.

Throwdown: The Apple iPhone vs the Android Fleet is a post from: Snakebytez

Ten utterly most useless gadgets

GADGETS

USB

useless gadgets

10. The Banana Protector is a plastic shield that retracts as your eat your banana. Is it protecting your hands or your banana? No one knows but it’s useless since a banana comes with built-in protection; courtesy of nature.

9. USB toothbrush

Anything that can be attached to your USB port. Number 9 covers a lot of territory from a USB vacuum cleaner, which could not even suck up air, to a USB toothbrush. A toothbrush? No one will ever brush their teeth while standing over their keyboard. Unless of course you have a USB basin…

8. The Fake Sunroof.

This is for people who need…for people who want…I’m not sure what sort of person would purchase a fake sunroof, but it’s an interesting little magnetic gadget that you can stick to the roof of your car. It’ll match your fake tan for sure.

7. Double-sided shoes.

How often have you stood up from the sofa and wished that you didn’t have to turn your shoes around to put them on? Frustration indeed, but no more when you have the sophisticated uselessness of the double-sided shoes. There’s no back or front, any way you’re facing is the right way round with this fancy footwear. Walking in them might be a bother but who said gadgets have to be functional?

6. Private Laptop ViewerThink

of the Private Laptop Viewer as a snuggy-blanket and personal privacy device all in one. Alternatively, you could get up, with your laptop, considering that it is portable and go to another room. If you can’t though and you want complete privacy, then just slide your arms and head into the laptop privacy viewer and you are all alone, in your private cyber world. The intake of oxygen is not guaranteed.

Now we head into the top 5, and competition for the most useless gadget of all time is stiff.

5. The Electric Candle

has been named by some as the most useless gadget ever invented. Firstly, an electric candle is worse than useless if you’ve just meandered into a storm and have no electricity. Secondly, why would you want an electric candle?

4. Laser guided scissors

Laser guided scissors are on everybody’s favourite list of useless gadgets. They cut just like regular scissors, so nothing new there, but the concept of cutting a straight line drawn with a pencil was just too much for this inventor. Now if they had invented scissors that use a laser to cut through anything it may have taken off.

3. The Armpit TV

The Armpit TV gadget is useless. Or is it? Think of this as your service to humanity when you’re on the tube or subway. First, make sure you have a sweet smelling armpit and then wear your shirt with built in armpit TV. When you’re standing in a crowded train hanging on to the overhead handles, you can entertain the world. Just don’t fight over the remote now.

2. Briefcase Toilet

When you know you’ve got to go but don’t fancy using a public toilet, the handy, but utterly ridiculous Briefcase Toilet is your Portaloo that goes with you. It actually works, making it not entirely useless and is guaranteed to be waterproof unless you exceed the maximum weight allowance.

1. Nothing

Looking for the perfect gift for that hard-to-buy-for friend? The aptly named ‘Nothing’ is the most useless gadget of all time. A perfect sphere of nothing, encased in artistically designed packaging, featuring the ‘Nothing’ logo. This is the gadget gift to give, when nothing else will do. Giving ‘Nothing’ is better than giving nothing at all, making this the gadget that does nothing, but allows you arrive at the party with something to give. Genius!

This guest post has been provided on behalf of www.broadbandchoices.co.uk; Ofcom accredited and impartial service – find the best broadband deal for you in 3 easy steps.

Ten utterly most useless gadgets is a post from: Snakebytez

Samsung SmartPhones: Review

GADGETS

Andriod

samsung

samsung galaxy s2

The world of smart phones is a jungle, and the diversity of wildlife is astounding. But walk into the store of your wireless carrier, and only a few smart phones will peek out from the underbrush at you. Never fear, gentle traveler, your guide is here.
