How to use Facebook Photos for Android contacts

Did you know? You can add custom photos to your address book from Facebook profiles so one can easily see who is calling you with a quick glance. There are many ways to sync your Facebook contacts with your mobile phonebook,  this article will walk you through few simple methods:

Method 1:

You can use the Facebook app for Android phones to choose an image from your contacts’ Facebook albums as their default portrait picture on your phone. The easiest way to do this is to use the sync option in the Facebook app. To use this when you set up your account, simply use the ‘Find Friends’ option. This option checks if contacts on your phone are also your Facebook friends and syncs relevant data including their profile pictures.

Do note that this works only if the contact name in your phone is exactly the same as their Facebook profile name. If your friends use nicknames or married surnames, then it might not work. A simple workaround is editing your phone contacts to match their Facebook names.

Method 2:

Another method is to use the Sync Contacts option, by going to the “Settings” menu on the Facebook app. Contacts Sync gives you options of syncing all data about your friends, including their Facebook pictures, status and contact info, or only data about friends who are already in your contacts list.

The downside is that you are stuck with the profile pictures that your friends put up. And if a close friend or relative with an odd sense of humor decides on an NSFW profile picture, the joke may be on you if your phone rings during an official meeting!

So if you want to set your own preferences for your friends, you can use another method of updating your contacts’ pictures:

1. You will need the Facebook app to be up and running on your mobile. So if you don’t have it already, download the latest version from the Google Play Store.

2. Navigate to the albums of the contact whose picture you wish to update. Scroll through till you find a picture you like.

3. Tap the Menu button to get the ‘Set As’ option. If you are presented with options to set this as contact icon, Home screen wallpaper or Lock screen wallpaper, choose Contact icon.

4. Then, from your contact menu, select the contact whose picture you’re updating.

5. Crop the picture as per your choice.

6. Save

That’s it! You should see the updated picture in your contacts list. If this doesn’t work, try syncing the SNS data. Some users have also reported logging out of their Facebook accounts and re-logging in helps to complete the sync.

Method 3:

And if you want to go a step ahead, you can download specific apps to do just this function. Syncmypix, available from Google Play Store, lets you sync your Facebook friends’ contact pictures with your phone contacts, apart from syncing them to your Gmail account.

Contapps is another good app which supports a similar functionality with the added benefit of being able to sync high-definition profile pictures, which other apps might not be able to handle.
